Broadway Ariel Redesign by justin-mctwisp Broadway Ariel Redesign by justin-mctwisp
So the Little Mermaid Musical has some lovely ideas... and a WHOLE LOT of really ugly ideas as well.

I decided to ease my own mind by thinking up a few revisions to the show.

First step: getting rid of that ridiculous skirt that the mermaids wear to hide their legs. It's a broadway show, seeing the legs in a color similar to the background gives us the idea that their not supposed to be viewed. (The skirts just distracted you from the rest of the costume, and you lose focus on the artistry of the tail movements and performers.

I hope you do I'd love to see your ideas for flounder and flotsam and jetsam, in my opinion those were the worst costumes in the musical.

I kind of wish they went with what they did at the Tokyo DIsneyland Little Mermaid show, where they use some clever wire tricks to simulate that they were swimming in mid-air. I can understand how difficult that would be for the actors though, but what they went with seemed kind of, well...half-ased almost? I don't know. Your idea is better.

Funny you mention that, the Dannish production currently uses harnesses and whatnot.

Really good. Reminds me a lot of The Lion King Broadway production, where most of the characters are actors wearing puppets of the characters while the actor wears a black of background coloured leotard.

Exactly what I was going for! I think it would have been a little more successful had they gone that route.

You should see what they actually used then.

Oooh, very nice. I didn't see Mermaid on Broadway so I don't know how the costumes looked. I heard they're going to put Hunchback on Broadway. Now THAT'S a Disney movie I know will work well on stage! What do you think?

Actually, Aladdin tested well in San Francisco this last spring. So next summer will be an aladdin musical.

Hm, I heard that Alan Menkin wanted both Aladdin and Hunchback on stage, so if he was able to do Aladdin, maybe Hunchback WILL be on the way. I saw the half-hour stage show at Disney World years ago. For a condensed show, it was very good and the staging was awesome. They even incorporated Clopin's puppet show into parts of the story. It's on YouTube if you want to see it.

With all the fancy staging they're doing these days, I guess they could do Aladdin. I wonder how they would do the Carpet scenes and the Jafar snake scene...if they even wanted to include that. And I'm sure they'd include "Proud of Your Boy", that song Clay Aiken sang for the DVD.

I saw a few pics of the new production, it seems more rooted in Arabian art and a little less flamboyant than the California Adventure version. (The genie only wears blue, no face paint, thank god.)

And on hunchback, yeah they had a Festival of Fools at Disneyland as well as the stage show in Florida. But they already had a German-language show for years that just ended it run a couple years ago. It was beautiful. Der Glöckner von Notre Dame.

Oooh, interesting costume choice for Genie. I was worried we were going to have a member of the Blue Man Group on stage or something (How much you wanna bet they're going to use a joke like that in the show?)

I never went to Disneyland, but back in '97 when I went to Disney World (Orlando) they had a live stage production at the Backlot Theater. The costume for Quasi was pretty nice; they just gave him a lump over his one eye. Yeah, I heard they did a German version awhile back, but it was said to be darker and sadder than the movie version. Maybe we could still get a chance at it? I mean, if they eased up on the Gargoyles, but kept the happy ending, I think it'd be a hit!

I like that, mix it with the concept they used in Lion King and it would be fantastic

Exactly my thoughts! Lion King was very puppet-laden and it worked. Don't know why they didn't carry on with TLM.
